Winter Checklist

With the snow that we have already seen this season it is important to remember to prepare your home for the winter months. These are some key maitenance things to remember before the next storm hits. If you didn’t complete these maintenance task, no worries! Virginia is most likely going to have a few more warm days. We always do! Take advantage of a warmer weekend and check off these task!

 

Check your heating system: Even though most people advise to get your furnace checked before the first snow fall you can still get it checked in the winter months. A professional will typically inspect for safety issues and perfom preventative maintenance.

 

Check your chimney: A chimney  check is a must! You don’t want to deal with your home filling up with smoke on a chilly night. Blockages can cause smoke to go directly into your home. Plan ahead to avoid this issue.

 

Clean your gutters: This is very important because if your gutters aren’t cleaned than the rain or snow will have no where to go. This could ultimately cause damage to your home. If you don’t want to clean them yourself hire someone. This is something that you won’t regret doing.

 

Maintain trees on property: This is a very important maintenance task to complete before any large snow storm. You must make sure that trees or the limbs are not close to your property. You don’t want to be put out of your home due to a tree falling on your roof. It is also important to make sure there are no limbs near your power lines. You don’t want to be the reason that the neighborhood lost power. Most winter storm disasters are preventable if trees are maintained.

 

Stock up on emergency supplies: Supplies such as a flashlight, water, blankets, non-perishable food items, and chopped wood with fire starters. These are all things that will help you during a severe storm if the power goes out. Everyone should have these items at their disposal incase of emergency.
