A clean and comfortable bedroom is essential to a good night’s rest. To feel truly at home as a renter, it is important to create a bedroom sanctuary of your own. Most people spend a lot of time – almost one-third of your life! – in their bedroom. It’s important for us to understand that if our rooms don’t nurture feelings of peace or relaxation, we should consider changing the setting. That being said, the bedroom should definitely be more than just a room for sleeping. It should be the one place you feel most comfortable in.
Generally, bedroom updates require no landlord approval. There are changes, however, that might be of concern to your landlord. To be safe, check with your landlord first before deciding on anything. One of the best no-approval-required places to start to create a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing bedroom is with your bed. Find the perfect mattress, sheets, and pillows. These are the essentials for a good night’s sleep. You can start the journey to a good night’s rest by replacing your old mattress. If it’s been around for seven years or more, you should contemplate buying a new one or you can add a plush mattress topper to renew the comfort. A good pillow is a wise investment for your resting head. When the pillows are hard and flat, it might be time to retire them and get new ones. Have you ever tried using a nice set of cotton sheets? If not, you should. Polyester is nice and cheap, but sheets made out of cotton are far better. Cotton breathes much better and can help keep you comfortable all night long.
As it is, the most comfortable bed, coupled with a bedroom that’s just as pleasant, is what fosters a space of relaxation. Get creative with the appearance of your bedroom. This will allow you to accomplish an attractive and personalized space of your own. One way is to free your bedroom of any unused items or clutter. Clear the space of anything that will only serve as an eyesore. It’s definitely easier to relax when everything is neat and tidy. Arrange your things by placing them in compartments. This is one step towards relaxation.
Also, why not decorate your space? Make it truly your own by giving it visual appeal and personality. One way of doing this is by placing photos or artwork on your walls. This adds color and visual interest to your home. Without having to ask for landlord approval, you can start designing your space by simply using colorful bedspreads and heaps of pillows. If that’s not enough, place an accent lamp on the bedside table. The possibilities are endless! If your bedroom has a large wall, try adding a colorful quilt or other items to add warmth and liven up your space. If you’re the type of person who wants to switch things up every now and then, a few non-permanent changes could be right up your alley. Something as simple as the addition of curtains or even the placement of rugs in specific areas. Blackout curtains can help eliminate outside light while adding a houseplant can help freshen up the air.
Of course, there are more permanent ways to personalize a bedroom. However, landlord approval should be obtained in writing before attempting to do so. For instance, painting an accent wall, adding paneling or chair rail or even adding a simple border to your bedroom walls. Another option could be to install shelving or other fixtures on the walls. Those need holes to be drilled into the wall and other more lasting changes. Though these are, indeed, good ideas to create your ideal sleeping space, it’s best to ask for the approval of your landlord before you start anything. A good rule of thumb is that anything you add that cannot be easily removed, damage-free, generally requires pre-approval from your landlord first.
And, last but not least, good ventilation and airflow inside the room. Once these two are guaranteed, your bedroom is certainly going to be comfortable. Generally, this requires an HVAC system checkup and prior landlord approval. A small but important detail nonetheless, if the house does not already have one, ask your landlord to allow you to install a ceiling fan. Just remember that if you plan to make such changes yourself, any electrical work must be performed by a licensed electrician. If you think those aren’t for you, there are other installations that aren’t permanent. Such as freestanding fans, air purifiers, or even diffusers. These can help circulate and freshen the air in your bedroom and keep you deep in restful sleep.
